Mental Returns to The Arts at Center Street

September 29 - October 8

MENTAL examines the functional dysfunctionality of the human experience,
and the ways in which people choose to navigate life’s turbulence.

After her divorce, 40-year old Amy Clark-Reed returned home to her religious, medicated mother Ellie, who has a history of running off without notice. Lately, anytime Mom runs off, Amy and her siblings get together for a meal and wait for the cops to bring her home. The play joins the Clark siblings for 12 hours at the house where they grew up, in a small town on the outskirts of wine country in Northern California.

MENTAL originally premiered at The Arts at Center Street in June of 2016. Critical response to MENTAL was overwhelmingly positive, finding the play to be "raw, relatable, and moving." The creativity of presentation and the depth of the script combine to form a very deep and moving drama that captures the complexity of human social identity given societies tendency to label, categorize, and generalize, despite the narrative context of our individual lives.

Since writing it, Gregg D. Garner has written and directed BREATHE, A New Musical and the original play HOMELESS, both of which played to sold out audiences. HOMELESS was said by critics to be a watershed event in Nashville theater. Garner is best known for “ALIEN: The Musical,” which was performed at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC), and reprised for the Chancellor of Vanderbilt and his lecture series at the Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts. The musical received critical acclaim, including “Most Outstanding Original Play/Musical” for Tennessee in 2016.

MENTAL runs 2 hours including one intermission.
Doors open 45 minutes prior to show.
Due to mature content, children under the age of 13 will not be permitted.
